Chris, this is excellent, and your observations very close match my own, factors I noticed, if in a child-like way, in my own native Texas and in Mexico when we lived there when I was 12 and 13, the first time for several months, the second one cut short by auto thieves scaring my Mother out of the country after just a few weeks -- but as a kid fluent in Spanish (back then), I got really plugged into Mexican culture. I don't need to point out how much violence there is in contemporary Mexico! I perhaps especially noticed this stuff during my years as a police and security officer back in the 1970's into the early 1980's. After all, as an armed officer operating in such a culture, I either paid attention -- or risked getting shot myself.
